Mason
I set a plate of Mac and cheese on the table, and after that, I walked to get a glass of juice. Zoe made food, and because I came late, I had to heat mine in the microwave before eating.
It has been a very long day for me, as I have had so much to do. I finally left the office at 9 pm.
I heard footsteps behind me, mixed with the low giggling of a feminine voice. Once I turned, I saw Zoe walking towards me, her eyes were pinned on her screen as she typed.
I took my first bite when she settled beside me. “When did you come back?” She asked.
“A while ago. I thought you were asleep.” She shook her head, stood and walked to the fridge. “You’ve been on your phone a lot lately,” I noted. She was always chatting and always giggling. I had a feeling this had something to do with a man.
“Are you dating now?” I asked, and for a while her body went still.
She takes a plate and places a slice of cake on it. She returned to the table with the plate, accompanied by a glass of juice. “What do you think? I’m I dating someone or not?” She threw the question back at me.
I reached for the glass of water in front of me and raised it to my lips. I took slow sips before speaking, “You don’t answer questions with quer-” my phone rang at that moment, cutting me off.
“Daniel, what now?” I asked, releasing an exasperated sigh. He has been on my neck all through the day.
“Sir, it’s President Tim. He has been hospitalized.” My heart stopped for a moment as I allowed the words to sink in. “What happened?” I inquired once I got myself back
“Poison,” my eyes flung wide open, “what?” I stood and rushed to the stairs, which I took in two. “Where did he eat his last dinner?” I asked at the same time, saying a silent prayer, it wasn’t Lydia’s hotel. I don’t want her implicated in anything.
I got to my room and reached for the doorknob,
“Lydia’s hotel.” My hand on the doorknob paused, and my heart sped up. “Shit!” I cursed under my breath before walking into the room.
“Send me the location,” I instructed and ended the call. Taking a jacket and car keys, I hurried out of the
room.
“Where are you going? At least finish your food.” Zoe’s voice called after me as I took large strides to the door.
“I’ll be back soon, go to bed.”
I hated hospitals. A nurse assisting a man in a wheelchair passed me. “Make way, it’s an emergency,” a male voice said hurriedly. I looked to the side to see a bed being rolled in. A doctor was currently on top of the bed, pressing down on the chest of a woman, trying to stop the bleeding.

I felt my mouth go sour, and scrunch my face. My already beating heart accelerated. I searched for the receptionist spot. “Isn’t that Miss Lydia?” I had almost forgotten that Daniel was beside me. True to his word, when I looked ahead, a woman was standing in front of the receptionist, she had her back towards us, but I could tell it was Lydia.
No doubt she had also gotten the news that President Tim was here. “I need to see him.” The desperation in her voice was palatable.
I’m sorry, but we can’t –”
“She’s with me.” I said, walking to her side. I held her hand in mine. The nurse was about to oppose, probably talking about how I shouldn’t be allowed to see my friend, when Daniel stepped forward.
I stepped back, holding Lydia’s hand in mine. She had a worried look on her face, and when her eyes met mine, I squeezed her hand lightly, “Don’t worry, everything will be fine.” I said, “Tim is a strong man.”
“Let’s go in.” Daniel said.
Later that evening, we found out that, contrary to what we were told, Tim wasn’t poisoned. He had an allergy, and the chef, who probably knew nothing, added bits to his meal. Without an antidote to help curb the effect, he landed in the hospital.
In Tim’s defence, his PA. never forgets to ensure the chef is aware that nuts are absolutely forbidden in his food. So, the chef probably forgot, which was unprofessional. But because Lydia is my beloved and it was her hotel he would not allow her hotel or chef to get implicated.
“Are you sure you’d be okay?” Lydia asked him for the umpteenth time, her eyes wrinkled at the side with
Worry
“Mason, come take your woman away. If she keeps getting all worried about me, I might just have to steal her away.” He joked, but I didn’t laugh because I didn’t find it funny.
The reason we fell apart in the past was because he seduced my girlfriend, Daisy, and then dumped her just to prove he could have my girl.
There was that undiluted pride in him that had to be satisfied, and that drove him to ruin our friendship, as I couldn’t forgive him. That was also how the name Dee came about. Daisy was popularly known as Dee. And even after we made up, he never stopped calling me that.
“He’s fine,” I said in a rough voice, grabbing hold of Lydia’s wrist. I pulled her to my side. She winced a little, and that was when I realized I had held on to her wrist too tightly. “I’m sorry,” I quickly apologized, releasing her hand. “Are you okay?”
Confusion etched on her face, but she nodded.
This didn’t go unnoticed by Tim, who didn’t say a word.
After a while, he spoke, “You don’t have to stay the night with me, I’ll be fine on my own.”
“No one wanted to stay the night.” And his lips curved upwards. He looked between us, “You can only speak for yourself, you can’t say the same for everyone, right, Miss Lydia?”

“Huh?” Lydia, who had been examining her hand, jerked her head in Tim’s direction.
“We’ll be taking our leave,” I announced.

After bidding him good night and quick recovery, Lydia and I walked out, me behind her. I was about to step out when Tim stopped me, “Mason.” He rarely called my name. I paused and turned around. “I would never do that again. I am a changed man.” The sincerity in his voice was heavy.
