That was all it was. Nothing more.
She was truly over him. His gestures of concern and attempts to win her over stirred nothing in her heart. The place in her heart that had once belonged to Andrew was now occupied by Tristan. There was no chance of them getting back together.
“As long as you know,” Emma said.
Emily offered a small smile and said no more.
After breakfast, drowsiness washed over her again. She pulled the thick coat over herself, her head drooped, and she fell back asleep.
When she next woke, her neck was stiff and sore. She kept her eyes closed, kneading the tense muscles.
“You’re awake?” Emma’s voice came from beside her. Emily nodded, her eyes still shut.
“The IV is almost finished. Let me check your temperature.”
Emily turned her face toward her, and Emma pointed the digital thermometer at her forehead.
Seeing the number, Emma’s face lit up. “Oh, it’s down to 37.4! That’s great.”
Emily felt it, too. The dizziness was mostly gone, and her strength was returning. She didn’t feel nearly as weak as she had that morning.
“Do you need to use the restroom? I can help you,” Emma asked softly.
Emily shook her head, glancing up at the IV bag. There was only a little fluid left. “Let’s just wait for this to finish.”
She picked up her phone to check her messages. She had texted Elizabeth that morning to say she wouldn't be coming into the office, and Elizabeth had told her to rest well.
Emily opened her messaging app to look through her unread texts. Tristan’s chat was pinned to the top. She tapped on it and saw several messages from him. She had been so out of it that she hadn’t even noticed them come in.
Tristan: [Are you at the hospital?]
