Honestly, Tate Vargas would have been a much better choice than Dennis Lane. He could get proof way faster too. But Emily still wasn’t sure if Melisa Vargas had already told Tate what happened. She didn’t want to risk making a move and messing things up.
After Emily nodded, the police left the room. She turned to Elizabeth and asked, “How’s Andrew Lane doing?”
Elizabeth let out a heavy sigh. “He’s still in the ICU. The doctor says he’s lucky. The knife missed his heart, so he’s got a chance. If it had been just a little to the side, he’d be gone. Honestly, it’s a miracle he made it.”
Emily lowered her eyes and leaned back quietly against the headboard. “Did anyone tell his assistant?” she asked in a low voice.
Elizabeth nodded. “He came by already. I asked him about it, but he hasn’t told Andrew’s family yet.”
Emily just nodded. “Alright.”
Elizabeth glanced at her and her voice dropped. “You were just going to expose Isabella Austin. How did you and Andrew end up getting hurt instead?”
Emily’s eyes shifted. “I tried to set a trap for them, but they were already setting one for me. I wasn’t careful enough.”
Elizabeth let out another sigh. “I haven’t told your aunt what happened, by the way. You can decide if you want her to know.”
Emily nodded silently.
Elizabeth sat down at the edge of the bed. “So, tell me. What really happened tonight? Did Andrew save you?”
Emily summed it up for her in a few sentences. When Elizabeth finished listening, her expression was complicated. “I never thought Andrew Lane would stick his neck out for you like that. He actually took two stab wounds for you.”
She nudged Emily’s arm. “So what are you thinking? Was this Benjamin Gomez and Isabella Austin’s doing?”
Emily’s thoughts were all over the place. She couldn’t find a clear answer.
