My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 1069

"And so?"

Emily's voice was icy, and the assistant instantly fell silent.

"So what, I'm supposed to be grateful? Over a few rings I never even wanted?" Her eyes were calm as she looked at him. "You really are a loyal assistant. Your boss is lying in there, and you're already out here defending him."

The assistant hesitated, embarrassed, and lowered his head. "I know what happened tonight. It was Mr. Lane who saved you, wasn't it?"

Emily turned away, refusing to meet his eyes. "And how much do you really know about what happened between us?"

He pressed his lips together, saying nothing.

"This is something he owed me," Emily said quietly. "He needed to make it right. I won't thank him for it. Do you understand?"

The assistant stared at her, looking shocked. "Mr. Lane hasn't even woken up yet..."

Emily cut him off. "If you were in my position, you wouldn't say any of this. You don't know our past, so don't assume you can judge. Does Mr. Lane even know you're out here talking for him like this?"

The assistant felt his throat tighten. He stared at Emily, but her face showed no hint of emotion.

He really couldn't figure her out. To him, Emily seemed so cold. Andrew Lane was lying unconscious in the ICU after saving her, and she didn't seem to care at all.

He didn't know what had happened between them, but he was sure Emily was being far too harsh.

Of course, Andrew, still unconscious, had no idea any of this was happening.

The assistant had wanted to get through to Emily, but it was clear it had the opposite effect.

He didn't dare say another word. If he kept going, Emily would only get angrier, and there would be no way to fix things with Mr. Lane later.

In a quiet voice, he finally said, "I'm sorry, Ms. Blair. I shouldn't have said so much."

Emily turned to Elizabeth. "Let's go back."

Elizabeth watched Emily's face, nervous, and only managed a soft "Okay."
