Andrew’s eyes looked a little lost, his expression almost distant.
Emily didn’t react, her voice steady. “Isabella Austin’s trial is tomorrow.”
“I know,” Andrew said.
Emily glanced at him, her tone calm. “The case is moving fast. Was that your doing?”
Andrew met her gaze and held it. “And if I said it was? What would you think?”
She tried to keep her voice level. “Why are you doing all this?”
He paused. His eyes seemed to darken. “Are you upset about it?”
Emily wasn’t sure how to answer.
Isabella Austin had crossed every line. Emily felt nothing for her, not a shred of sympathy or regret. Dealing with her had been easy, almost cold. But Andrew… that was different.
She remembered everything he’d done, how much she’d hated him, how she’d once wanted to get back at him. So why did he save her? Why did he keep stepping in, over and over again, especially with Isabella’s case?
He wasn’t all bad, but he wasn’t good either. Everything between them was a mess, impossible to sort out. Her need for revenge wasn’t as sharp as before, but there was no way she could ever just forgive and forget.
She turned to look at him. His hand rested on the bed, pale against the sheet, the mark from the IV standing out starkly.
Her eyes softened for a second. Finally, she said, “Thank you.”
Andrew shook his head. “You don’t need to thank me. This was something I had to do. It’s not really about you.”
She asked, “Will you be at the trial tomorrow?”
He shook his head again. “I’ve got work. I can’t make it.”
