The Lane Group was making headlines again, this time because of Andrew Lane’s old marriage to Isabella Austin. The gossip was enough to rattle their stock price for a while, but the company was a giant, and Andrew was nothing if not ruthless. They took a hit, sure, but it didn’t take long for things to settle down.
All that chaos seemed to keep Andrew busy. He hadn’t bothered Emily in ages, and for the first time in a while, her life actually felt calm.
Everything seemed to be going right.
Well, almost. Emma George couldn’t help but sigh dramatically when she saw the missing person ad the Austin family posted. The reward money caught her eye, and Emily could tell she was getting ideas again.
Emily sat her down, firm and clear. She wanted nothing to do with her birth family, and she wasn’t about to let Emma mess things up behind her back. Emma nodded along, but Emily wasn’t sure she really got the message.
That peaceful stretch ended at Tristan Davis’s birthday party.
Tristan never used to make a big deal out of birthdays. In the five years Emily had known him, he’d always kept things low-key. With things tense at home, he never spent his birthday with family. It was always Emily who rounded up their friends for a simple dinner, a few gifts, nothing fancy.
This year was a whole new story. Tristan had just started taking over his family’s company, and the Davis family wanted the whole world to know he was the heir. His birthday party was the perfect place to make it official.
They went all out. Celebrities, business tycoons, socialites—everyone who was anyone got an invite.
Emily was on the list, too, as the founder of Vertex International. But since the Davis family still hadn’t made their feelings about her clear, she turned down Tristan’s offer to go together and headed over on her own.
The party was at one of the Davis family’s hotels. As Emily walked up to the entrance, a hotel staff member hurried over. “Excuse me, are you Ms. Blair?”
