Emily kept her face perfectly blank, eyes fixed on Tristan. He finished talking and waited, but she just kept staring, calm and unbothered.
Tristan cleared his throat. “You can check my phone now.”
Still nothing. Emily didn’t say a word, didn’t even move. Tristan started to feel uneasy. He reached over and pinched her cheek, not too hard. “Say something. Don’t just stare at me like that.”
That finally broke her. Emily burst out laughing, clutching his phone in her hand, her eyes crinkling with pure amusement.
It took Tristan a second to catch on. He let out a helpless laugh, relief washing over his face. “You did that on purpose.”
Emily doubled over, still giggling. “You were being so serious. I couldn’t help it…”
She kept laughing, shoulders shaking, until Tristan groaned and pulled her into his arms. “You think you’re funny, huh?” He put on a fake scowl and gave her cheek another playful squeeze. “Messing with me like that.”
Emily collapsed against his chest, trying to dodge his hands, but he got a few more squeezes in anyway. He’d always liked pinching her cheeks, and now he was making the most of it.
He wasn’t rough, but she still got annoyed. Pressing her lips together, she reached up and ruffled his hair until it was a mess.
Tristan just laughed and hugged her tighter, letting her have her revenge.
When she was finally satisfied, she leaned back, checked out the chaos she’d made of his hair, and nodded, pleased. “Now that’s better.”
