Emily watched as Tristan swiped away from Albert’s chat and typed in another name.

She couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows.

Tristan’s whole vibe shifted. He looked even more serious now, almost tense, as he tapped into her chat with Andrew.

Suddenly, Emily felt a flicker of guilt. She knew Tristan had always been a little sensitive about Andrew. Lately, Andrew had been in the city, and since he’d once saved her life, they’d been talking a bit more. The chat history was definitely longer than usual.

But honestly, she didn’t think it was a big deal. Andrew was always the one texting first, sending message after message. She barely replied, and when she did, she kept it formal and distant.

Still, seeing the flood of Andrew’s texts made Tristan’s expression darken.

Emily felt herself tense up for no good reason, watching as he scrolled through the conversation, his face stone cold.

Her replies were all business. Almost every message was about his recovery—polite, detached, never personal. Andrew, on the other hand, didn’t seem to know where to stop. She’d noticed it, sure, but it wasn’t like she could control what he sent.

Andrew’s messages were things like:

“Are you off work yet?”

“I miss you today. Can you come see me?”

“Emily, don't be so cold to me, please?”

“My wound’s hurting again. Can you visit?”

“I’m feeling a lot better. Thanks for finding me that caregiver.”

He’d send messages like that practically every day.
