Tristan let out a cold laugh. “You talk a good game, but whether Emily and I are married or not, it’s still no excuse for you to butt in.”
Andrew stopped pretending to be polite. He slid his teacup forward, meeting Tristan’s eyes with that calm, almost smug look of his. “I’m just putting things back where they belong. I was the first man Emily ever loved. First love is special, you know. When she was living with my family, I taught her about life, about people. I was the one who helped her, guided her, made things easier for her. Back then, to Emily, I was everything. When I was happy, she was happy. When I was upset, she was even more upset. If something happened to me, she’d worry herself sick, and she never hid a single feeling.”
Tristan’s face changed, just a little.
Andrew kept going. “Have you ever seen Emily look at you like you’re her whole world? I doubt it. Only I have. That kind of thing, it sticks with you. No one forgets their first love, right? And she’s sentimental. She’s not the type to let go so easily.”
He leaned in a little, voice steady. “I think you know it too. Emily still cares about me. She hasn’t really moved on, and that’s my confidence talking. You can see it, which is why you’re so on guard, why you set up this little meeting to warn me off.”
Tristan’s expression darkened.
Andrew’s voice stayed calm. “Talking about the past won’t change anything. I know I messed up before, but I’m willing to spend the rest of my life making it right. And I’ll tell you one thing. You and Emily? You’re never going to last. She and I, we’re the ones that fit.”
Tristan jumped up, fists clenched at his sides, glaring at Andrew like he might explode.
The thing was, Andrew wasn’t wrong.
He and Emily had been almost glued together lately, spending every spare minute as a pair. Tristan could see it, clear as day. Emily still had feelings for Andrew—the kind of feelings that start when you’re young and never quite go away.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t feel this sense of danger.
