Dennis refused to believe any of it. He kept begging his grandpa to take him to see his mom.
Kevin was at his wit’s end. He had no idea what else to say.
Luckily, Amelia had just come back from a trip. She reached into her bag, pulled out a postcard from some tourist spot, and handed it to Dennis. She told him that Isabella was visiting that very place.
With something real to hold onto, Dennis finally started to believe. He kept asking over and over, but every time he was told that his mom hadn’t been taken by the police, and she wasn’t mad at him or his dad either. After hearing the same answer a few times, Dennis relaxed a little. He actually smiled while looking at the postcard.
But the truth has a way of coming out. A few days later, Dennis started asking questions again. If his mom wasn’t in trouble and wasn’t angry, then why didn’t she call?
Kevin and the others had no good answer. All they could say was that Isabella was just really busy.
Dennis knew they were lying. He could tell right away.
But this time, he didn’t throw a fit like before. He just got quieter. He spoke less and less, barely saying a word. Most of the time, he just sat there, staring at the front door, waiting for someone who never walked through it.
Everyone noticed, and it broke their hearts.
When Amelia came home again, Dennis’s hope flickered back to life, and he started crying, begging for the truth.
Amelia felt something settle inside her, like she’d finally made up her mind about what to do.
She took the tissues Ethan handed her and gently wiped Dennis’s tears. Her voice was soft and warm. “Dennis, it’s okay. I promise, this time I really did go see your mom.”
Dennis stopped crying instantly. He looked up at her with wide eyes. “Really? Where is she? When is she coming home? When can I see her?”
