Kevin let out a short, unimpressed sound. “If you can’t calm yourself down, then go to your room and stay there. Think about what you’ve done. You can come out when you’ve figured it out.”

He glanced at the butler and the maid, both holding Dennis in place. “Take him to my room. Make sure someone’s watching him. He’s not allowed out until I say so.”

The butler and maid nodded and moved to follow his orders.

Kevin didn’t look back as he walked away.

Dennis stood there, stunned. He’d begged his grandfather for help, but instead, he was getting locked away. Not only did Grandpa turn him down, he was sending him to his room like a child who had misbehaved.

Dennis’s face twisted with sadness and disbelief. He started struggling against the butler and maid, desperate to break free.

“Let me go! Let me go!”

The butler and maid were sweating as they half-dragged him upstairs to the third floor, straight into Kevin’s room. Before they left, the maid locked the sliding door to the balcony and the window in the bathroom, just in case Dennis tried anything reckless.

Even as they were closing the door, Dennis was still shouting, his voice raw, rolling around on the bed like the world’s most wronged kid.

Once the heavy door shut, his cries became much quieter, muffled by the thick walls.

The butler and maid wiped the sweat from their brows, glancing down at the fresh scratch marks Dennis’s nails had left on their arms. They both let out a deep, exhausted sigh.

Amelia had watched the entire scene from her spot in the living room, her nerves tight. She hadn’t expected Kevin to be quite this strict.

Kevin took a seat in the armchair to her left, his old, tired eyes landing on her. “You were here just now. Why didn’t you stop Dennis from seeing those news stories?”
