Kevin’s face stayed stone-cold. His voice was low, almost threatening. “Let go.”
Dennis was a mess, face streaked with tears and snot. He cried so hard his voice was hoarse. “Auntie, please help me. Please… Grandpa’s really going to kill me…”
He wasn’t anywhere close to being killed. At most, his hands would be sore for a few days. But Amelia had watched Dennis grow up, and seeing him punished like this made her heart ache.
She grabbed the ruler with both hands and pleaded in a quiet voice, “Grandpa, that’s enough. You’ve been at this for a while. He’s just a kid. We should talk to him, help him see what he did wrong. There’s no need for all this. If you keep hitting him, he’ll end up resenting you.”
Kevin didn’t budge. “Look at him. Does that look like someone who’s sorry?”
Amelia pressed her lips together. “You’re hitting him, Grandpa. He’s been spoiled his whole life, of course he won’t admit he’s wrong like this. Please, put the ruler down. Let’s talk to him. Dennis is smart, he’ll get it if you just explain.”
Kevin shot her a dark look. “Move aside.”
Dennis saw that even Amelia couldn’t stop his grandfather. Fear flashed in his eyes, but he still thought of his mom. He wouldn’t say sorry, just pressed his lips together and wiped at his tears with the back of his hand.
Amelia shook her head. “No, Grandpa. I can’t let you keep hitting him. If you go on like this, something bad might really happen.”
Kevin’s voice was stubborn, almost angry. “If I let him keep acting up, this family will never have peace. Everyone at the company is running around cleaning up after his mom’s mess. Things are finally starting to settle, and now he stirs up trouble again. If this gets out, it’ll be a disaster. Better he learns his lesson now.”
She bit down on her words, trying to stay calm. “Grandpa, if Dennis was an adult and still didn’t get it, I wouldn’t say a thing, no matter how you punished him. But he’s just a child. He doesn’t understand any of this. All he knows is that his mom was taken away by bad people. His reaction is normal. Please, just stop. You’ve already punished him. His hands are all red and swollen. That’s enough.”
Dennis knelt on the floor, held in place by the butler and a maid, scrubbing at his tears. His face was stubborn and silent.
