Daniel Perez had only just started this job a few days ago, so he had no idea what kind of relationship Mr. Davis had with Ms. Blair. When the receptionist called, Daniel thought it was best to come up and tell Tristan himself.
Emily Blair is here?
Tristan’s face lit up with surprise. He glanced at the door, tossed his pen aside, and stood up in one swift move. “Where is she?”
Tristan’s reaction was so enthusiastic that Daniel was taken aback. “Ms. Blair is waiting in the conference room. If you’d like, I can bring her in.”
That seemed like the normal thing to do. Emily had shown up without an appointment, and Daniel, not sure if Tristan would want to see her—though she was, after all, the CEO of Vertex International—had just asked her to wait in the conference room until he could check with Tristan.
But looking at Tristan’s expression, Daniel got the feeling he might have messed up.
“Next time she comes, just bring her straight to my office,” Tristan said.
Daniel froze for a second, suddenly starting to form his own ideas about what might be going on between the two of them. “Of course. I’ll go get Ms. Blair right now.”
But Tristan was already moving, fixing his collar, heading for the door. “No need. I’ll go myself. Which room is she in?”
Daniel stopped walking. “The small conference room.”
Tristan headed off so quickly that Daniel had never seen him this eager before.
Halfway there, Tristan suddenly stopped and turned to check his reflection in the glass wall. The glass wasn’t very clear, but he could just make out the bruises on his face.
He frowned, staring at his blurry reflection for a moment, then turned to Daniel. “Be honest. Are these marks really obvious?”
Bruises darkened the corner of his eye, his cheekbone, and the edge of his mouth. On his pale skin, they looked even more striking—and with Tristan’s sharp features, they were impossible to ignore. The bruises were like ugly smudges on a painting, making you want to wipe them away.
