My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 1205

No one knew if Dennis really understood what Amelia had said. He just nodded as tears slid down his cheeks, doing his best not to argue or talk back.

Kevin watched him, taking in those puffy, red eyes that still shimmered with fresh tears. Slowly, something inside him softened. This was the boy he’d raised, the child he’d held in his arms so many times.

He reached out his hand. “Come here. Let Grandpa hold you. No more tears, okay?”

Dennis hesitated, rubbing at his eyes with the back of his hand. His gaze was misty and uncertain as he looked up at Kevin. When Kevin’s hand stayed out, Dennis finally slipped his own into it. Kevin gently pulled him closer, wrapping him in a hug.

At first, Dennis’s body was stiff, like he was afraid to relax. Kevin patted his back softly, then grabbed a tissue to wipe at the sticky tears on Dennis’s cheeks. Gradually, Dennis began to sink into the warmth of Kevin’s arms, letting himself be comforted.

Kevin’s voice was old and shaky, but gentle, just like it used to be. “It’s alright now. No more crying.”

Dennis sniffled and wiped at his face with the messy tissue. “Grandpa, I was so scared. You were really, really angry.”

Kevin glanced down at the spot on his shirt where Dennis’s tears had soaked through. Whatever anger he’d felt before just melted away.

He held Dennis close and spoke quietly. “I only got upset because I care about you. You’re still so little. Doing something like that… thinking about hurting yourself… that’s not something you should ever do. Life is precious, and ending it isn’t the answer. I just wanted you to remember that.”

Dennis pouted, his voice small. “I know.”
