The nurse kept her head down, fists clutching the sides of her uniform. In her mind, she whispered a silent apology to Emily Blair before turning to follow the hospital director out.
“Hold on. Don’t go just yet.”
The woman’s sharp voice stopped her in her tracks. The nurse tensed.
The director frowned, pushing his glasses higher up his nose, impatience flickering in his eyes. “What now?”
The woman pouted, her tone syrupy sweet. “Uncle, this nurse hasn’t apologized to Carson or me.”
The director immediately understood her meaning and shot the nurse a look.
Biting her lip, the nurse hesitated for a long moment, then murmured, “I’m sorry. It was my fault…”
The woman smiled in satisfaction and waved her off. “Alright, you can go now. Next time, watch where you’re going, and don’t mess with people you shouldn’t.”
Eyes brimming with tears, the nurse bit down on her lower lip. She kept her head bowed and hurried away, her posture rigid and defeated, her retreat nothing short of pitiful.
The director’s tone dropped, grave and warning. “This is a hospital. Don’t go overboard.”
The woman’s eyes narrowed in a pleased grin. “Relax, Uncle. You know you can trust me.”
He grunted in response and turned to leave.
Emily Blair, struggling to keep her temper in check, spoke in a low voice. “You’re the hospital director. Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”
The woman’s face twisted in anger. “What’s your problem? Just pay up already!”
A flash of calculation passed through the director’s eyes as he let out a cold chuckle, staring Emily down. “If you can’t afford to pay, I’m sure we can work something else out.”
His gaze raked over her, lingering on the exposed curve of her waist with a mix of contempt and suggestiveness. He gave a low, mocking laugh. “So pitiful. Maybe I could help you.”
A sycophantic smile spread across his face as he hurried to greet Andrew Lane, bowing his head in a show of deference. “Mr. Lane, what an unexpected pleasure! What brings you here?”
Andrew’s gaze slid past him, landing on the back of Emily’s head. His eyes, dark and unreadable, betrayed nothing.
“Mr. Green, what’s going on here?”
At that moment, Emily was still pinned to the ground by the woman, her limbs restrained, one arm braced awkwardly against the floor in a desperate attempt to push herself up. The motion had caused her shirt to ride up, exposing her slender, pale waist—brilliantly stark against the dim hallway.
Andrew’s eyes darkened further, his expression inscrutable.
Mr. Green let out a nervous laugh. “Nothing, sir, nothing at all—a simple misunderstanding, I assure you.”
He spun around and shot the woman a glare. “What are you doing? Let the patient go. Now.”
The woman froze, her expression faltering as she caught sight of the newcomers. Her cheeks flushed bright red. She instantly released Emily’s arm, grabbing her son and pulling him back a few steps.
