My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 316

Emily Blair took a shaky breath, bracing herself on the floor with one hand as she slowly pushed herself upright. She tugged her twisted shirt back down, covering her slender waist, then carefully got to her feet with the help of the ground beneath her.

Andrew Lane simply watched in silence. His sharp gaze was enough to make Mr. Green bow his head even lower.

Mr. Green turned back, impatient. “What are you standing around for? Give her a hand, will you?”

The woman glanced up, taking in the strikingly handsome face of the newcomer, his expensive suit, and the gleaming watch at his wrist. Her heart began to race, and her grip on her son tightened. A flush crept up her cheeks.

She’d been raising her boy alone ever since her divorce several years ago. Suitors had come and gone, but none had impressed her. She wasn’t interested in just any man.

But this one—he was good-looking, well-dressed, and clearly wealthy. She couldn’t help but feel a flicker of hope.

Of course, the woman by his side was stunning too, but that hardly mattered. What mattered was making sure she caught his attention.

At Mr. Green’s urging, she swayed over, helping Emily Blair up from the floor and guiding her gently back into her wheelchair.

As the woman drew near, Emily’s body tensed for a moment before she allowed herself to be settled back into the chair.

Once she was sitting securely, Emily finally looked up at Andrew Lane and Isabella Austin.

That’s when she noticed that Andrew had never taken his eyes off her. His gaze was deep and unreadable. Isabella, standing at his side with her arm linked affectionately through his, looked down at Emily—her expression was gentle, but there was a certain smugness in her posture, a sense of superiority.

Emily thought to herself, Isabella probably believed that after everything that had happened these past few days, she had already won, and that Emily was no longer a threat.

She wiped her eyes again, then looked shyly—almost coquettishly—at Andrew. “Sir, I think you misunderstood. It was this young lady who poured hot water on my boy. That’s why things happened as they did. I never meant for any of this.”

Emily’s eyes glinted with irony.

Andrew Lane really was a magnet for trouble; it had only taken a moment for this brazen woman to turn meek and demure.

Mr. Green nodded eagerly. “That’s right, sir, that’s exactly how it happened. The boy’s been crying nonstop since he got burned—nothing we do can calm him down. We were just trying to sort out the compensation, but this lady refused to cooperate, blamed the child, and tried to leave. She wouldn’t take responsibility, so we had to restrain her.”

The woman sniffled, adding in a small, pitiful voice, “Yes, sir. It’s just the two of us. We never expected something like this—sorry you had to see it.”
