The housekeeper fell silent for a moment, waiting for a response from the other end.
But as the seconds ticked by and Andrew Lane’s voice never came, a wave of anxiety washed over her. Her heart thudded with unease, and she wondered if she’d made a mistake by saying anything at all.
She pressed her lips together, but in the end, decided to speak up: “Ms. Blair doesn’t seem to trust you much. No matter how I try to persuade her, she refuses to reach out… I think maybe there’s a misunderstanding between you and Ms. Blair. Shouldn’t you try to clear things up? After all, you haven’t come to visit her or even called, so she has no idea you care. It’s not surprising she’s upset with you.”
She rattled off everything in one breath, then quickly clamped her mouth shut, anxiously waiting to hear what Andrew Lane would say.
There was another pause on his end, and her heart started racing.
Would he be angry at what she’d just told him?
Her palms grew damp with nervous sweat before Andrew Lane finally answered.
“I understand.”
The housekeeper felt as if a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She exhaled in relief, replying quickly, “Then, Mr. Lane, that’s all I wanted to say.”
Andrew Lane ended the call almost immediately.
She held the phone for a moment, letting out a long sigh.
Whenever she had to deal with Andrew Lane, she was always taken aback by the commanding presence and skill of this man who wasn’t even thirty. Even though she was three decades his senior, she could never quite hold her head up high or meet his gaze without feeling intimidated.
Emily crept quietly down the hallway, stopping just outside the source of the commotion.
One voice boomed above the rest: “This has to be fixed, now! Several of our employees have had their personal information leaked, and the phone calls won’t stop. I don’t need to tell you how vile those messages are! And the higher-ups are furious—this has to be resolved by the end of the week! I want a solution, now, or you’re all out!”
“How did something so simple get so out of hand? Every single one of you is responsible! Start taking this seriously—we’re not paying you to sit around and do nothing. Figure it out, and don’t just mope around looking sorry for yourselves. I can’t stand it! How did you even get hired in the first place?”
“A bunch of useless incompetents—the lot of you can’t even handle this? Pathetic! Absolutely pathetic!”
Emily’s brows drew together in concern as she listened to the tirade.
