Emily Blair knew exactly what Tristan Davis was referring to—the whole messy ordeal at the Starlight Piano Competition a few months back. It didn’t surprise her that he knew. She’d never tried to hide it from anyone around her; even if she had, it would have been pointless.

The whole thing had blown up online, fueled by a few choice factors, and even though most people only knew fragments of the truth, her neighbors would still whisper her name and shoot her sideways looks.

Of course Tristan Davis had heard.

She wasn’t trying to run from her past, ugly as it was.

What did surprise her was that after seeing all the gossip and rumors swirling around online, Tristan Davis didn’t keep his distance. Instead, he’d driven her to the testing center himself, walked in with her, right in front of the security cameras, making no attempt to hide—if anything, he seemed to stand taller.

Emily glanced over at Tristan with a small smile.

This smile was a world away from her earlier bravado.

“It’s nothing,” she said, “After all, once the entrance exam results come out, my name will be on everyone’s lips anyway.”

It didn’t take long for Tristan Davis to catch her meaning.

He laughed, low and easy, the tension melting from his eyes. “You really are something else.”

“But you’re only eighteen,” he added, grinning. “You have every right to be.”

Emily chuckled. “I’m heading in.”

Just as she’d guessed, the entrance exam was exactly the same as her last life—every subject, every question, a perfect match.

She sailed through each section, her pen never pausing.

By the time she stepped out of the testing hall, the school gates were packed. Parents and students clogged the entrance, shoulder to shoulder, barely any room to breathe.

Even in the crush, Emily spotted them right away—Elizabeth Wilson, Emma George, and Xavier Gonzalez waiting off to the side.

She paused, and when Elizabeth waved, Emily hurried over.
