Emma George’s eyes darted between Emily Blair and Tristan Davis, her face lighting up with delight. She clapped her hands together and said, “That’s right! I’ve made plenty of food—come on, everyone, let’s eat before it gets cold!”
Whenever Tristan was around Emma, he seemed the perfect gentleman. “Of course, ma’am, let’s hurry up and go.”
Emily’s smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Wow, you switch faces fast, don’t you?”
Tristan shot back, “Takes one to know one.”
A month and a half later, just as Emily had predicted, her name was making headlines all over the country.
Emily Blair had scored a truly jaw-dropping result on the national entrance exam.
Out of a possible 750 points, she’d earned 734—making her the number one student in the nation, and by a landslide at that. She was a full thirty points ahead of the runner-up.
For a while, the internet was buzzing with talk about Emily Blair and her unbelievable score. Her school wasted no time hanging up a bright red banner congratulating their star student on achieving the top rank in the entrance exam. News reporters and college admission officers managed to dig up her contact info and kept calling her.
Aside from answering the call from Kingswood University, Emily ignored all the others. Still, she sent the good news to Ms. Carter, Arianna George, and a few close friends.
Yes, she’d successfully applied for the Computer Science program at Kingswood University, and their admissions office had officially welcomed her to enroll.
“Can someone get Isabella Austin a guide to not manipulating people? Or maybe a tutorial on leaving young, pretty girls alone? And while we’re at it, can her fans stop embarrassing themselves?”
“Honestly, for Emily to make such a bold statement when everyone was dragging her—and now she’s number one in the country? That’s legendary main character energy. I’m officially a fan!”
“Who knows what Emily’s haters are babbling about. Maybe it’s just someone with the same name, ’cause there’s no way she could get a score like that. Don’t get cocky, or you’ll be the one with a swollen face when the truth comes out.”
“Tsk tsk, I can practically smell the jealousy through the screen. Haven’t you seen? The national TV station already aired a segment on Emily Blair—go watch it! And be sure to get some ointment for that bruised ego of yours, you’re going to need it.”
