Andrew Lane’s voice was low and stern. “Dennis Lane. You tell me yourself.”
Without a word, Dennis Lane ran straight into Isabella Austin’s arms, burying himself there and clinging tightly.
Andrew’s eyes darkened, his tone sharper. “Dennis Lane, who taught you to act like this?”
Emily Blair’s eyebrows twitched slightly.
So, Andrew Lane was actually on her side?
“Andrew…” Isabella couldn’t help but interject.
He kept his eyes fixed on the child in Isabella’s arms, lowering his voice, “Dennis Lane, this is my last warning. Are you going to keep misbehaving?”
Suddenly, Dennis erupted into loud, shrill sobs. “No, no, I won’t! Mommy, Mommy…”
Isabella’s heart ached for him, and she hugged Dennis even tighter. “Andrew, he’s just a child. Don’t be so harsh. We’ll teach him, but give him time.”
By now, even if Isabella had been naive before, she understood.
Things weren’t going Dennis’s way.
Andrew’s gaze was cold. “Isabella, let him go.”
She shook her head. “Andrew, he knows he did wrong—look, he’s crying.”
Andrew’s voice was grave. “He’s crying because he’s scared, not because he’s sorry.”
Dennis’s sobs only grew louder.
Isabella could hardly bear it. “Andrew, are you really going to side with outsiders and let your own son suffer?”
Andrew frowned, troubled.
“Exactly,” Emily murmured.
Andrew pressed his fingers to the bridge of his nose in exasperation. “Grandpa, you don’t know what happened.”
“Doesn’t matter if I do or don’t,” Kevin said gruffly. “Dennis is your son. Are you really going to humiliate him in front of others? You’re being foolish.”
With someone finally standing up for him, Dennis wriggled free from Isabella’s arms and ran to Kevin, burrowing into his embrace.
“Grandpa, it hurts…”
Kevin’s expression softened completely at those words. He draped a frail arm around Dennis’s shoulders. “Tell Grandpa—where does it hurt?”
Dennis, still sniffling, said in a small and pitiful voice, “I fell just now and it hurts.”
“Oh dear, where did you hurt yourself? Let’s get someone to fetch some ointment—soon you’ll feel all better, Dennis.”
Dennis nodded obediently. “Okay. It doesn’t hurt anymore when you’re here, Grandpa.”
Kevin beamed, his whole face lighting up. “Ah, that’s my boy, Dennis.”
