Andrew Lane was about to speak, but Kevin Lane shot him a warning glare.
“Don’t worry, Dennis. As long as you’re with me, no one’s going to push you around,” Kevin said, his meaning unmistakable.
Isabella Austin relaxed at last, a proud smile lighting up her face as she watched Dennis and Kevin talk.
Dennis Lane nodded, flashing a sweet grin. “Thank you, Grandpa.”
Kevin Lane’s back was stooped with age, but he still leaned down patiently to talk to Dennis, his voice gentle but firm.
Emily Blair couldn’t help but think Dennis was a clever kid. The moment he realized his lie was exposed, he switched tactics without missing a beat, claiming it was his own clumsiness that made him fall, not her. He’d learned Isabella’s two-faced tricks better than anyone, and it was honestly impressive.
“What’s with these people? Did you really grow up in a place like this?” Tristan Davis muttered close to her ear.
He was so near that Emily could feel the warmth of his breath brushing her cheek. She shifted her head away, putting some distance between them, and replied, “Which is exactly why I’m asking—why did you even come?”
Tristan’s voice was clipped. “What’s that supposed to mean? Am I bothering you now?”
Emily sighed. “No, what are you thinking? Sensitive much?”
“Sensitive how?”
“...Never mind.”
Tristan glared at her, frustration simmering. “Just so we’re clear, I’m here to stand up for you. Is that a problem?”
Emily arched an eyebrow. “Did I say it was?”
Tristan gripped her shoulders, exasperated. “Emily, look at me. I came in and took your side right away. What more do you want?”
She was genuinely touched, and gave him a nod. “I’m happy you did.”
Tristan looked like he was fighting the urge to pinch her cheek. “You’d better mean that.”
“I do—I swear,” Emily said quickly.
