It had taken Tristan Davis ages to work up the nerve to say those words. His heart was racing so fast it felt like it might burst, and his palms were slick with sweat. Desperate not to let Emily Blair catch on, he’d even leaned his head lightly on her shoulder, mentally rehearsing a dozen times before finally blurting it out.
But after all that—so serious, so earnest—Emily Blair just looked at him and said he must be out of his mind?
Tristan let out a breathy, incredulous laugh. “I’m serious. Why won’t you believe me?”
Emily didn’t even look up from her phone, just kept tapping away at the screen. “Aren’t you working for me this month anyway? What’s with all the talk?”
Emily Blair, you hopelessly oblivious idiot, Tristan thought. Why do I even bother trying to be romantic with you?
He cursed himself silently for ever putting his feelings on the line. What a waste!
Frustrated, he sat up straight, turned to her, and said with a stern look, “Seriously, your company, Rabbit Gang, needs a good launch theme for its new project. Since you can’t get the Black and White Rabbit brand, maybe I can introduce you to something that fits.”
The moment Emily heard “company” and “work,” she finally deigned to glance at him.
“You? You have a connection? Let’s hear it.”
Tristan smirked. “Ever seen that foreign movie about the arcade game city?”
Emily paused, thinking hard. “The one where the rabbit is secretly the villain?”
“That’s the one.”
Emily frowned. “Forget it. The director never sold any rights to anyone. I have even less of a chance.”
Tristan clicked his tongue. “You’re giving up before you’ve even tried?”
Of course, Emily had tried. She was bold and ambitious, and from the start, she’d set her sights on collaborating with that movie.
She’d emailed the production company several times—never got a single reply. To show she was serious, she even flew overseas to their headquarters, only to be turned away at the front desk every time.
