My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 577

Ryan Cox was well past fifty, short and stout, with stubby limbs and a belly that jutted out like he was several months pregnant. His face was broad and round, his eyes so small they were little more than slits, and his features arranged themselves into the unmistakable look of a petty, scheming man.

At the moment, Ryan was completely naked except for a thin sheet haphazardly thrown over his belly.

He had just ended a phone call and was now lounging against the headboard, cigarette in one hand and a glass of whiskey in the other, drinking after every drag—utterly at ease.

When Donna Thomas spoke, Ryan let out a mocking laugh and slammed his glass down on the side table. Whiskey sloshed out, seeping from under the sheet and splattering across the back of his hand.

He didn’t care in the slightest—just wiped his hand on the sheet, cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth, then shot Donna a sideways glance.

“Ms. Blair? You mean that little girl, Emily Blair?” Ryan stubbed out his cigarette, got up from the bed, and stretched his arms overhead.

“When I was making my fortune, she was probably still playing with dolls. She’s not nearly clever enough to take anyone from me. The only reason I even acknowledge her is because I’m polite—not because she’s Emily Blair. So don’t think that kid’s going to save you. Got it?”

He sauntered around the foot of the bed, taking slow, deliberate steps toward Donna.

Donna’s face drained of color. She hugged her knees to her chest and shrank back, her voice rising, terrified and desperate. “Stay away! Don’t come any closer!”

Ryan’s beady eyes roamed over her exposed skin, hungry and shameless. “Come on now. Our little fun was rudely interrupted by that call, but it looks like we can pick up where we left off.”

Donna broke down, sobbing, her voice ragged with panic. “Why? Why me? I don’t want this—can’t you understand? I said no!”

Ryan spat on the floor, voice dripping with venom. “You want to know why? Because a few months ago, Emily Blair turned me down. She stole a contract right out from under me, and I’ll never forget it. If I can’t get my hands on her, I’ll settle for her secretary.”

Donna clutched her clothes tight, glaring at him. “If you so much as touch me, I’ll go to the police. I swear I’ll make sure you rot in prison—I won’t let you get away with this!”

Ryan just laughed, a cold, ugly sound. “Sure, sweetheart. Whatever you say. Right now, I’d agree to anything.”
