Tristan Davis was sitting in Emily Blair’s office when the news came in.
“The Cox family is more complicated than I thought,” he remarked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Emily glanced up from her paperwork. “What did you find?”
Tristan swiveled his laptop around so she could see the screen. “Ryan Cox has an illegitimate son—Lucas Cox. He went to high school with Andrew Lane and Isabella Austin. They had a get-together a few days ago, and Lucas was there.”
Emily’s mind flashed back to that night—the one where she’d been so furious she nearly smashed a bottle over Ryan Cox’s head. She remembered Andrew Lane stepping in, saying, “That’s enough.”
She gave a low whistle. “Well, that’s definitely something.”
“That’s not even the most interesting part,” Tristan said, pointing to a photo on his screen.
“What else?” Emily leaned in.
The photo showed a younger Isabella Austin on a city street abroad, her shoulder pressed intimately against a young man Emily didn’t recognize.
“Who’s that?” she asked.
“Isabella Austin’s ex-boyfriend,” Tristan replied. “Benjamin Gomez.”
Isabella’s ex-boyfriend? That was a name Emily had never heard before. In all her years—her previous life and this one—she’d never known Isabella to date anyone besides Andrew Lane.
“Ex-boyfriend? That’s news to me,” Emily murmured, frowning.
Tristan grinned. “There’s more. Want to hear it?”
Emily looked up and met his eyes. “Go on.”
He crossed his arms, settling back. “I’ve been digging into Isabella Austin for a while, but some information was always out of reach—as if someone was deliberately blocking it, making sure it stayed hidden.”
He tapped the screen. “That picture was from a friend’s social media abroad. There are plenty more—shots of Benjamin and Isabella holding hands, hugging. They were definitely dating.”
Emily nodded, piecing it together. She remembered Isabella had gone overseas for college after high school. During that time, Isabella and Andrew Lane had broken up, so it made sense that Isabella might have dated someone else.
She asked, “But what does Benjamin Gomez have to do with the Cox family?”
Tristan shook his head. “Not the Cox family—the Lane family. He’s connected to Andrew Lane.”
Emily motioned for him to continue.
“I found out that Benjamin Gomez’s mother and Andrew Lane’s mother are sisters. When they were kids, their parents divorced, and the sisters were separated.”
Emily’s eyes widened. The web was more tangled than she’d ever expected.
