He rushed over, scooping Ashley Gomez out of Emily Blair’s arms and clutching her tightly to his chest. His voice trembled as he asked, “Sweetheart, does anything hurt? Are you okay?”
Ashley threw her arms around his neck, sobbing uncontrollably. “Daddy, I was so scared!”
Benjamin, breathless and shaken, pressed his cheek to hers. “It’s alright, I’m here. I’ve got you. Daddy’s here.”
Emily was still sprawled out on the grass nearby. Even though the lawn was softer than concrete, her back and head were throbbing from the impact when she’d shielded Ashley from the fall. She lay there for a long moment, unwilling to move, watching Benjamin hold his daughter close while she remained on the ground, alone and aching.
Eventually, a few concerned onlookers hurried over and helped Emily to her feet, each lending a hand until she was upright again. She sat for a second, rubbing her forehead, then slowly got up.
Only then did Benjamin, still holding Ashley, approach her. His eyes were full of concern and gratitude. “Emily, thank you for saving my daughter.”
He patted Ashley gently on the back. “Sweetheart, say thank you to Emily.”
Ashley, still sniffling, turned to look at Emily with tear-filled, round eyes. Her words came out broken and shaky from crying too hard. “Th-thank you, Emily…”
Leaning wearily against a lamppost, Emily managed a wry smile. “You two really do owe me one.”
Every inch of her body ached and her head was spinning.
Benjamin’s gaze darkened slightly. “Emily, I won’t forget this.”
Emily let out a pained laugh. “You make it sound like you’re plotting revenge.”
He looked momentarily startled. “I didn’t mean—”
