“Is everything ready?” Emily Blair got straight to the point as she walked in.
Lucas Cox looked exhilarated. He slapped a thick stack of documents onto the desk in front of her. “This is all the evidence of Ryan Cox embezzling company funds.”
Emily took the pile and flipped through it without much ceremony. “Let me have a look.”
Dark circles shadowed Lucas’s eyes, proof of many sleepless nights spent assembling the case. Still, excitement radiated from him as he shot a sharp, eager glance at Samuel Walker, who stood quietly behind Emily.
“So, this is the corporate spy Ryan Cox planted at Vertex International?” Lucas asked.
Samuel’s face was ashen. He looked down, shoulders slumped in defeat.
“Yes,” Emily replied coolly. “Where’s Ryan Cox now?”
Lucas rubbed his palms together, settling into the chair across from her. “He’s in the conference room, mid-meeting. If we move fast, we can catch him completely off guard.”
Elizabeth Wilson slid the documents across the table. “I’ve reviewed everything. The evidence checks out, and the seals are all legitimate.”
Emily gave a terse nod, pressing her hand on the stack as she turned her gaze on Lucas.
“I need to ask you again—are you absolutely sure you want to go up against your own father with me?”
Lucas’s eyes narrowed. “So you still don’t trust me?”
Elizabeth gave a dry laugh. “She’s reminding you: If Ryan goes down, your family’s business and stock prices are going to take a hit. Are you sure you’re ready for that?”
“I know,” Emily said quietly.
Elizabeth pressed her point. “If you know, then we need to slow down and make absolutely sure everything’s airtight before we move. One shot, that’s all we get.”
“But Donna Thomas can’t wait any longer,” Emily replied.
Elizabeth bit back whatever she’d meant to say, her words stalling in her throat.
Emily continued, “Her therapist’s seen her and told me she’s not in a good mental state. Cases like this wreak havoc on a woman’s reputation and psyche. The police and I have done everything we can to keep Donna’s identity out of the Ryan Cox investigation—Lucas doesn’t even know. But there were a lot of people in that room that day. Who knows who let something slip. Donna found out, and she hasn’t forgotten it.”
“She knows Ryan Cox walked free, too. She’s barely holding it together,” Emily said, her voice calm but her eyes sharp as glass.
