Emily Blair’s answer was crisp and clear. “Deal.”
Benjamin Gomez continued, “I’ll cover your medical bills and any lost wages. You have my number. Call me when you’re ready.”
Emily nodded. “Alright.”
Benjamin gave a brief nod, glancing past Emily’s shoulder toward Lucas Cox. “Well then, goodbye.”
He left without hesitation.
No matter how Ryan Cox tried to plead or beg, Benjamin never slowed his stride; his figure disappeared down the hall without a backward glance.
Lucas let out a breath he’d been holding. “I can’t believe Benjamin just walked away like that. Honestly didn’t see that coming…”
With Benjamin gone, Ryan’s face twisted into something ugly—his glare at Emily was so vicious, it was as if he wanted to tear her apart right there.
He sneered, lips curling. “Emily, back when I was building this company, you were probably digging ditches somewhere. If you think you can take me down, you’re way out of your league.”
Emily ignored him completely. She checked the time—she really needed to get back to the office.
Turning to the investigator, she asked, “So, what’s the situation now?”
The woman spoke quietly with her colleagues, then addressed Emily with a new formality. “Our investigation shows there’s sufficient evidence of criminal activity, Mr. Cox. We’ll need you and Samuel Walker to come with us.”
Ryan Cox was led out of the building, right in front of the entire staff.
Back in the office, Lucas couldn’t contain his excitement. He practically shouted his triumph for all to hear.
After leaving Lucas’s company, Emily didn’t head straight back to work. Instead, she made her way to a café on the other side of town.
It was a bit of a drive—she nearly finished her whole travel mug of coffee before she arrived.
The place was new, and the manager was a young woman about Emily’s age. She was there almost every day, making sure things ran smoothly.
As Emily pushed open the door, the gentle sound of piano music filled the air.
Emily smiled. “You’re the manager?”
Rose nodded. “That’s right. Is there something I can help you with?”
Emily nodded again. “Actually, I’d love to try the piano, but I’m not very good. Would you mind?”
Rose’s smile widened. “Of course not! We welcome anyone who wants to play. Even if it’s a little rough around the edges, you’ll still get applause from us. So if you want to, go ahead.”
Emily touched her nose in an embarrassed gesture. “Even if I haven’t bought anything?”
Rose laughed. “Absolutely.”
Without further hesitation, Emily slipped onto the piano bench. A polite ripple of applause rose from the room.
She let her hands drift lightly over the keys.
The instrument wasn’t top-of-the-line, but Emily could tell it was well cared for and clearly loved by its owner.
