My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 609

Ryan Cox fixed her with a cold, mocking smile. “Surprised to see me still out here, Emily Blair?”

Emily shrugged, unfazed. “Honestly? Not really. You’re like a cockroach—hard to get rid of.”

Ryan’s mood was unusually light today, so he let her jab slide. He grabbed a disposable cup of water from the coffee table and took a long, satisfying gulp. “I don’t have time for your nonsense, Emily.”

“Emily, over here.”

Elizabeth Wilson waved from the doorway of an office down the hall.

Emily nodded in acknowledgment and headed over.

The office was cramped—four desks crammed in so tightly there was barely room to move. The narrow aisle was crowded with adults, making the space feel even smaller. Stacks of paperwork were piled high on desks and chairs. Emily swept her gaze across the room, noticing most of the files were about Ryan Cox.

As she stepped inside, her eyes landed immediately on the two most sharply dressed people in the room.

Andrew Lane and Isabella Austin.

Emily made her way to Elizabeth’s side. “What’s going on?” she murmured.

Elizabeth’s brow was furrowed deeply. “Internal Affairs says there’s some big situation upstairs—they’re pulling everyone off this case to investigate something else. We’re supposed to drop everything and wait a few days before resuming.”

She muttered under her breath, “A few days? In a few days, Ryan will be long gone—probably halfway across the world—and this whole thing will be dead in the water.”

Her words weren’t loud, but in the stuffy office, everyone heard.

Emily glanced around. The investigators from Internal Affairs kept their heads down, avoiding eye contact as they shuffled papers—clearly uncomfortable.

Lucas Cox stood nearby, his face flushed. He’d obviously argued his case already, but it hadn’t made a dent.

Andrew Lane and Isabella Austin stood off to the right, arms linked, looking perfectly composed.

Emily narrowed her eyes and feigned innocence. “So, what brings you two here?”

Isabella smiled sweetly, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. Her voice was gentle. “Emily, I heard about everything going on between you and Ryan. I don’t know all the details, but it really is a strange coincidence—everyone being called away for another case. Maybe you could cut the team some slack and just wait a few days?”
