“It’s just curiosity,” Emily Blair said. “But he doesn’t want to talk about it, and I’ve never asked. Let’s just leave it at that.”
Elizabeth Wilson raised an eyebrow. “You really trust him that much? Aren’t you worried he could be some kind of criminal?”
Emily laughed. “He’s a Davis. Trust me, he’s not that type.”
Elizabeth wasn’t convinced. “Still, you can never be too careful.”
Emily gave her a playful shove on the shoulder. “Stop overthinking it. We’ve got work to do tonight, so let’s focus.”
“Mr. Lane, the Compliance Department has already been informed,” the assistant announced.
Andrew Lane acknowledged her with a quiet nod.
The assistant hesitated. “They mentioned they’ll be reopening the Ryan Cox case in a few days, but…”
Andrew’s tone grew serious. “Go on.”
Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Word is, Kevin Lane might already know what’s going on.”
Andrew handed her the file in his hand, his expression calm and unreadable. “Don’t worry about it. Just handle your part.”
The assistant had barely left when, as if to confirm her warning, Andrew’s phone rang sharply.
Kevin Lane was calling.
Andrew picked up. “Granddad.”
Kevin Lane’s voice was old but still commanding. “How’s that thing I asked you to do?”
Andrew’s dark eyes flickered, inscrutable. “You know the situation.”
Kevin grunted. “Andrew, I told you before—Ryan Cox is the son of one of my old war buddies. We owe it to him to help out however we can. Last time, you made a call on your own and nearly had the police drag him away. Now Ryan’s come to me directly, so I expect you to take care of this.”
