Emily Blair didn’t bother with pleasantries. “You know I’ve always wanted the rights to Game City.”
“If I win, I want you to sell the Game City rights to me—to Vertex International.”
Isabella Austin clenched her fists, then suddenly cut in, “Mr. Parker, you don’t need to worry about funding. You know that if I land the lead role in your movie, my husband will make sure the budget is more than covered.”
Mr. Parker glanced at her, his expression unreadable.
Isabella drew a breath and pressed on. “Didn’t you say that if I placed in the top three at the Eldoria Regional, I’d get the lead? I’m confident I can do it, and you’d never have to worry about financing again.”
Mr. Parker replied, “That’s a separate matter. Didn’t you swear up and down that Ms. Blair plagiarized? If that’s true, this bet is a sure thing for me. You don’t need to be anxious.”
The smile froze on Isabella’s lips.
Mr. Parker turned to Emily. “All right, I accept your terms—but I want to know when this bet is settled.”
Emily smiled coolly. “Tonight. It’ll all be over tonight.”
Mr. Parker frowned. “Tonight?”
“That’s right. The preliminary results are announced this evening. You can look forward to it,” Emily said evenly.
“Well, I should go get ready.” Twirling her contestant badge between her fingers, Emily waved at Linda. “See you later.”
Isabella watched Emily walk away, a heavy sense of dread settling in her chest, as if a stone had lodged itself there.
Suddenly, Mr. Parker spoke. “Ms. Austin, don’t stress. Just focus on your performance. I’m looking forward to seeing what you can do.”
Isabella snapped out of her thoughts and nodded. “Of course. I just didn’t expect you to agree to Emily’s wager.”
She met Mr. Parker’s eyes, feeling a sudden wave of unease.
His gaze was unusually somber, and his voice matched. “She sounded so certain. Maybe there really is some misunderstanding.”
