My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 636

Emily Blair looked at her calmly and said softly, “So you do know how to be afraid.”

Isabella Austin stared back, her eyes icy for a few seconds before she let out a cold snort. “If you’re trying to play the same tricks you did all those years ago, maybe you should remember who sent you packing back then. Life in the capital hasn’t been easy for you, has it?”

Emily’s lips curved in the faintest smile. “With the five million you wired me, I managed just fine.”

That five million was a wound Isabella had never managed to heal—a constant reminder of how Emily had outsmarted her.

A shadow flickered in Isabella’s eyes, but she quickly replaced it with a gentle smile. “Five million? Please. In the past few years, the shares Andrew’s transferred to me are worth more than I can count—five million is nothing.”

She leaned in, voice syrupy sweet. “Emily, if you’d managed to become Mrs. Lane, all of that could have been yours. The Lane family takes care of their own, you wouldn’t have had to scrape by in the city. But unfortunately for you, Andrew loves me. He married me. Our son, Dennis, is smart and adorable, and his grandfather absolutely dotes on him.”

Emily glanced away, her expression unchanged. “Let’s hope you can still smile like that in a few minutes.”

The awards ceremony ended, and Emily turned to leave the stage.

Isabella snatched her wrist. “Emily Blair, just what do you mean by that?”

As the words left her mouth, she looked up and caught sight of Rose Ward standing at the edge of the stage, her face unreadable, her gaze cold.

Isabella immediately searched for Mr. Parker.

He was no longer seated at the judges’ table.

A jolt of anxiety shot through Isabella.

Emily slipped her hand free with ease. “You shouldn’t be asking me, and you know it.”

With that, she strode away.

Without missing a beat, she announced, “Excuse me, everyone, I have something to take care of. Let’s catch up later.”

She barely finished her sentence before grabbing Rose by the wrist and pulling her into a quiet corner.

Out of sight from the others, Isabella’s expression darkened, her voice sharp. “Why are you here? I never gave you permission. Leave, now. And don’t show up at any more of these competitions.”

Normally, Rose would have apologized at once.

But this time, she just looked at Isabella, her tone flat. “You lied to me without asking my permission.”

Isabella frowned, defensive. “Lied to you? I transferred the money just like I promised. I haven’t cheated you, have I?”

Her face grew stern. “Listen, Rose, you’d better leave right now, or I’ll have to reconsider our arrangement. Don’t forget—your grandmother still isn’t out of the woods. If I pull my medical team, how much time do you think she really has left?”
