Benjamin gave a short, humorless laugh. “Isabella, you already abandoned me once. I need something real—something I can actually hold in my hands. Otherwise, I can’t help you. I need some security.”
Isabella clenched her teeth. Benjamin never asked for anything small; whatever he wanted wouldn’t come easy.
But she had no choice. The situation was urgent, and she was backed into a corner.
“As long as you don’t destroy my family, I’ll agree to anything.”
On the other end, Benjamin suddenly fell silent.
With every second of quiet, Isabella’s anxiety grew sharper, her nerves stretched thin.
After a few moments, Benjamin let out a low chuckle. “Isabella, are you really in love with Andrew Lane? Have you forgotten why you married him in the first place?”
Her heart skipped a beat. “That’s none of your business. Just tell me—will you help me or not?”
Benjamin narrowed his eyes, his voice dropping. “Fine. I want you to spend a week with Ashley. She’s always wanted to meet you.”
Ashley?
Isabella frowned, a cold wave of dread washing over her.
Benjamin said nothing more, waiting for her answer.
A terrible suspicion began to swirl in Isabella’s mind.
“Who is Ashley?”
Benjamin’s lips curled into a faint smile. “It’s only been a few years and you’ve already forgotten?”
Isabella fought back the urge to scream. “Who is she, Benjamin?!”
The next moment, Benjamin’s words landed like a knife to her chest, sending shockwaves through her.
“Ashley is our daughter. She’s six and a half now—two years older than the child you had with Andrew.”
Isabella’s mind went utterly blank.
Benjamin’s tone darkened. “Isabella, I’ve let a lot slide. You left me and moved back home; I didn’t blame you. You married Andrew Lane and had his child; I didn’t blame you. You ignored me for years; I still didn’t blame you.”
“But Ashley is our daughter. As her father, there’s no way I’d just abandon my own child.”
Isabella clung to the last shreds of her composure. “Did you bring her back here? If not, don’t ever bring her back. Just leave her overseas.”
Benjamin shattered her hopes with a single sentence. “There’s no way I’d leave her abroad. She’s staying with me.”
Isabella raked her hands through her hair in panic. “I’m going to lose my mind.”
She snapped, her voice rising in desperation. “You need to take her away—now. I don’t want her anywhere near me. Just keep her overseas, forever.”
Benjamin stayed silent.
Her voice broke as she pleaded, “Benjamin, I’m begging you. Please, just take her away. Don’t come back. If you ever loved me, please—this is the only thing I’ll ever ask of you. I’m begging you, help me…”
“Isabella,” Benjamin replied quietly, “after you decided to leave and break things off, you had to know I wouldn’t do everything you asked anymore. I did love you—a lot. But I’m not that boy who used to follow you around, not anymore.”
