My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 649

It was late at night. Andrew Lane’s voice was gentle enough as he spoke: “Mom’s busy. She’ll be back tomorrow.”

Dennis Lane’s little voice was thick with disappointment. “But Mom hasn’t come home to tuck me in for two nights now. Grandpa isn’t here, and you’re always busy, Dad. I can’t sleep at all. I feel really awful.”

Andrew lowered his voice, soothing. “I’ll stay with you tonight.”

Dennis wasn’t done trying his luck. “Dad, I don’t want any more shots. And I don’t want to take medicine.”

“That won’t do, kiddo. You’re sick—you have to take your medicine and get your treatment.”

Unintentionally, Emily Blair overheard their conversation as she filled the thermos with hot water. She screwed on the cap, ready to slip away quietly.

Just as she turned, she spotted a familiar pair walking down the hall.

Benjamin Gomez hurried along, carrying Ashley Gomez in his arms. Ashley’s little hand clung to Isabella Austin’s sleeve as they made their way straight toward Emily.

Emily raised an eyebrow, kettle in hand.

Behind her, separated by only a thin wall, Andrew and Dennis Lane were still talking. Ahead, Benjamin, Isabella, and Ashley would reach her in just a few moments.

Behind her, Dennis was still pleading, “Dad, can you call Mom and ask her to come home and stay with me? Please?”

Andrew’s patience seemed endless. “Mom’s got work, Dennis.”

Well, this was about to get interesting.

The “busy” Isabella Austin was, by the look of it, spending her time with another man and his child.
