My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 652

Ashley Gomez stared at her in a daze, nodding blankly.

Dennis Lane, not to be outdone, sought Isabella Austin’s attention. “Mom, I have a fever too.”

Isabella gently touched his forehead. “I know, sweetheart. I’m worried about you as well.”

Benjamin Gomez’s face was clouded with concern. Isabella pressed her lips together and said, “Mr. Gomez, you’d better take Ashley to see a doctor right away.”

Ashley opened her mouth to protest, but Isabella quickly cut her off. “Go on, don’t waste any time. I need to stay with Dennis and Andrew.”

Dennis let out an indignant huff, giving Ashley a smug glance before wrapping his arms possessively around Isabella’s neck, as if to declare his special place in her heart.

Ashley hated the boy her mother was holding, and she couldn’t understand why her mom, who had just been comforting her, was now turning her attention to someone else. Her eyes grew red with frustration.

But growing up as Benjamin Gomez’s cherished daughter, Ashley was used to being comforted, not to seeking comfort herself. She refused to compete with another child for affection.

She pouted and turned her head away, refusing to look at Isabella.

Benjamin let out a soft, ambiguous chuckle and held Ashley closer. “Well then, we’ll be off.”

Once they finally left, Isabella let out a sigh of relief. She picked Dennis up and walked over to Andrew Lane. “Andrew, let’s head out too.”

Uneasy, Isabella worried that Andrew might have noticed something, or that he would start questioning her.

Sure enough, the next second, Andrew asked, “So, you just ran into Benjamin Gomez by chance?”

Isabella kept her composure, replying calmly, “Yes, I’d just finished practicing piano when I saw them. Ashley’s sick, so I wanted to help.”

She patted Dennis’s back, her voice tinged with guilt. “If I’d known Dennis was sick, I would have rushed back right away.”

She expected Andrew to ask more, but he only gave a short grunt and let it go.

Watching from the side, Emily Blair was thoroughly disappointed by the lack of drama.

Your wife and her longtime ex-boyfriend showing up together in the middle of the night with a child—anyone would be suspicious, right? Why wasn’t Andrew Lane making a scene?
