Thinking of Daisy, Emily Blair couldn’t help but feel a pang of bittersweet ache in her chest.
That ache, the tender sorrow, faded only slightly as her attention shifted to Ashley Gomez.
By the time she reached Ashley, Emily already had a way of handling these emotions.
She reached out and gently covered Ashley’s eyes with her palm. “Ashley, how about we play a little game?”
Ashley was quiet for a few seconds before asking, “What kind of game?”
With a soft voice, Emily explained, “There are lots of little ones around us. I’ll describe someone, and you keep your eyes closed and listen. When I finish, you try to find the one I described. If you get it right three times, I’ll give you a small prize. Deal?”
Children were always quick to get distracted, and Ashley was no exception. As soon as Emily finished, Ashley’s eyes lit up with excitement, and she nodded eagerly.
Emily described two children, and Ashley found them both in no time. While they played, the Lane family quietly slipped out of Emily’s sight.
As Emily glanced around, her eyes landed on a tall male doctor with his back to her. The plain white coat he wore looked almost like a designer piece on his lean frame, as if he were walking a runway rather than hospital halls.
Emily leaned in close to Ashley’s ear, speaking softly. “White coat. Doctor. Jacket.”
“Okay, now open your eyes and see if you can find him.”
She took her hand away. Ashley’s big round eyes darted around the room.
As soon as she spotted the doctor’s back, her finger shot out. “I know! It’s that doctor’s jacket, right?”
Emily pressed her lips together with a smile. “That’s right. You’re very clever.”
Ashley lifted her chin in proud triumph. Emily bent down, gently ruffling her hair.
“Are you talking about me?” a voice sounded above them.
Emily looked up, her gaze pausing in surprise.
The man in front of her was striking, his features softer than most men’s, almost delicate. There was no mistaking him—it was Alex White.
