Isabella had seen that look in Benjamin’s eyes before.
It was the same steely gaze he’d given her the night of the piano competition, after the preliminary round—when she’d begged him to let her go home.
The answer had been just as firm then as it was now: No.
That look was a reminder of the deal between them.
A surge of panic fluttered in Isabella’s chest. She couldn’t help but look up at Benjamin, her eyes pleading, her voice trembling. “Benjamin, you…”
Before she could finish, Alex stepped forward, pulling Isabella behind him with a protective arm.
“If you’re looking for a fight, just say it, Benjamin,” Alex shot back, barely keeping the anger out of his voice. “But leave Isabella out of it. And don’t forget—you and she broke up years ago.”
Benjamin’s expression darkened, jaw clenched.
Just then, Ashley squirmed out of Benjamin’s arms, her eyes glossy with unshed tears, peering at Isabella from behind Alex.
Isabella caught the look, and in a flash, she knew exactly what Ashley was about to say.
She quickly cut her off. “Ashley.”
Ashley’s words died on her lips.
Isabella managed a gentle smile. “Sweetheart, I know you’re a good girl. But right now, I need to help Mr. White with his bandages. I can’t stay with your dad, but you can, okay? Keep him company for me, will you?”
“Auntie,” she said, the word soft but clear.
Alex caught the title and his eyes lit up, tossing a more defiant look Benjamin’s way.
Benjamin’s face turned an even deeper shade, the muscles in his jaw working furiously.
Ashley’s lower lip trembled as she stared at Isabella, red-rimmed eyes brimming with hurt. “But why can’t you come with Daddy?”
