Emily Blair’s brow twitched; she was about to tell Tristan Davis to drop the sentimental act when, all of a sudden, he squeezed her shoulder—hard.
“But you know, I have good taste. Five years ago, I picked a real diamond in the rough—you.”
Tristan flashed a smug grin, straightened his collar with exaggerated pride. “I’m pretty impressive myself, you know.”
Emily just stared.
Here we go again.
He bumped her shoulder, not-so-gently. “So what’s your plan?”
She glanced down at her phone. “Take it slow. Dig for answers.”
He grew serious. “I mean it. If you need help, just tell me, okay? Don’t make me read your mind.”
She smiled and clapped him on the shoulder, just as firmly. “Of course. After Ryan Cox’s mess, I realized you’re actually useful. If I need you, you’ll be the first to know.”
Tristan gripped her shoulder in return, the two of them suddenly striking the pose of solemn brothers-in-arms.
“Good to hear, partner. That’s all I needed.”
Emily couldn’t hold back a laugh. “You’re such a weirdo.”
By now, they’d reached the hospital entrance.
Her driver had already pulled up. As soon as they climbed into the car, he handed a folder across the front seat.
Matthew Ross’s family history was straightforward. His parents were blue-collar workers, scraping by on modest wages. He had a younger brother and sister—fraternal twins. Life was always tight, but things fell apart when Matthew’s father died in a factory explosion when Matthew was just six. His mother, who’d been off work that day, survived.
After that, the four of them lived on his mother’s meager paycheck. Still, Matthew and the twins were bright, consistently top of their class. Matthew even earned a full scholarship to study abroad, and while he was working toward his doctorate, both twins got into prestigious universities as well.
Then everything changed, abruptly, after Matthew had been working for two years.
The twins vanished right after graduating from college. Both Matthew and his mother reported them missing, but the police turned up nothing.
What caught Emily’s attention was the timing—the twins disappeared within a month of Matthew taking over Rose’s grandmother’s affairs.
She flipped the page. The next section detailed the twins’ lives from birth until they went missing. After that, the file contained only missing person flyers and the official police report—nothing more.
What was stranger still was that, after a month of searching, Matthew and his mother just…stopped. They didn’t even bother to put up flyers anymore. According to neighbors, they’d given up completely, no longer willing to waste time looking for the missing twins.
