My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 724

The last thing Alex White remembered was the second time the car flipped. His head slammed into the window so hard that blood streaked across the glass, and then everything went black.

When he tried to move, a sharp pain shot through every part of his body—his head hurt the worst, throbbing with every breath.

Lying in the hospital bed, Alex felt a tangled mix of emotions. His voice came out thin and hoarse. “Still can’t move.”

The doctor nodded, letting out a weary sigh.

Doctors in this city all seemed to know each other, gathering for conferences and talks. Alex, young and brilliant, had a reputation even among the older generation. Seeing him laid up like this clearly bothered the doctor, though he tried not to show it.

He spent several minutes explaining Alex’s injuries and what to expect. It helped, a little. The prognosis was far better than Emily Blair’s—Alex just needed ten days or two weeks of rest, and he’d be ready to go home.

Alex blinked in understanding, too tired for words.

The doctor left, and a pair of police officers entered.

Alex’s memories of the crash were a blur, the whole thing over in less than a minute, but they were burned into his mind in terrifying detail.

One of the officers spoke. “The truck driver wasn’t hurt. He’s in custody and has confessed to driving under the influence. Is there anything you’d like to add?”

Alex’s brows knit together. “He was drunk?”

The officer nodded. “Yes. We tested his blood alcohol level. It was well above the legal limit.”

At that, the officer’s tone soured. Drunk driving had caused this crash—two people badly injured, one of them still fighting for her life—while the drunk at the wheel walked away without a scratch. It was infuriating.

But something didn’t sit right with Alex. He tried to piece together the images—the truck trailing them for a while, then pulling up alongside only when the road had emptied. The sudden, violent swerve wasn’t the kind of sloppy mistake a drunk driver made—it was too deliberate.

A chill crept up Alex’s spine. He frowned, and at that moment, a familiar voice cut through his thoughts.

“Is there something you want to say?”

She’d been sitting on the side of the car that took the full force of the crash. It couldn’t be good.

Tristan’s expression darkened. “She’s still in critical condition.”

Alex nodded, lips pressed tight. He’d guessed as much.

Tristan took a step closer. “I have questions, too.”

Alex looked up. “About what?”

“Why were you with Emily Blair today?” Tristan’s stare was unrelenting, demanding answers.

Under the weight of that gaze, Alex felt almost like someone caught having an affair, exposed and cornered.

But this involved Isabella Austin, and until he understood exactly what had happened, he wasn’t about to tell anyone the truth.
