My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 728

Emily Blair stared at Tristan Davis for a moment, her vision swimming until a wave of dizziness forced her eyes closed again.

It took her a long while before she managed to open them once more.

A warm hand suddenly covered hers. She blinked slowly, turning her gaze to Tristan.

He was half-kneeling by her hospital bed, his hand resting gently over hers, those striking eyes fixed intently on her.

Emily tried to curve her lips into a faint smile, her voice barely more than a whisper. “What happened to you?”

Tristan was a mess—his hair rumpled and falling across his forehead, a rough shadow of stubble on his jaw, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his bloodshot eyes. His lips were so dry they’d started to crack. He looked nothing like the calm, put-together man she remembered.

He squeezed her hand, leaning closer. “What did you say?”

He must not have caught her words.

Emily shook her head. She didn’t have the strength to repeat herself.

Tristan held her gaze, his voice soft and hoarse. “If you feel uncomfortable, let the doctor know, okay?”

She closed her eyes again, too tired even to blink quickly. Every movement felt like wading through molasses.

The doctor came over, gently explained her condition, then leaned down to ask her a few questions in a low voice.

Exhausted as she was, Emily answered each one carefully.

Afterward, the doctor’s expression relaxed. “The most dangerous period has passed. We’ll move you to a regular room today and keep you under observation for a few more days.”

Emily nodded faintly. Tristan straightened up, and to her surprise, his tone was earnest—almost desperate. “Thank you, doctor.”

She watched as the doctor smiled and gave Tristan’s shoulder a reassuring pat. “See? She’s out of danger now. You can finally rest. When’s the last time you slept?”

A nurse nearby chimed in, “Seriously, you’ve been camped out here for three days straight. Even the healthiest person couldn’t keep that up. Don’t wait until she recovers just to end up in a bed yourself.”

Tristan pressed his lips together. “I know. Thank you.”

She cleared her throat, slow but steady, and voiced her suspicions.

There was a brief silence. Tristan said nothing.

Emily picked up on the mood. “What is it?”

One of the officers hesitated, then said, “The other gentleman who was with you woke up two days ago. He mentioned the same suspicion. We looked into it, but there’s nothing unusual. The driver insists he was drunk and confused—that’s what led to the crash.”

Drunk and confused.

Emily almost laughed.

A confused, intoxicated driver followed her car for miles, then chose a wide, empty road to crash into her? That wasn’t confusion. That was intent.

But she knew the police would investigate any suspicious lead thoroughly. Since they’d found nothing, she couldn’t press the issue any further.
