My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 732

Emily Blair’s face twisted in pain, all the color draining from her cheeks.

No matter how much the celebrities joked on the TV variety show, Andrew Lane didn’t so much as flinch. The moment he heard Emily cough, he stood up and crossed the room, gently propping her upright and resting his hand on her back.

“Easy, easy,” he said, his brow furrowed. “Do you want me to call a doctor?”

A stabbing pain radiated from Emily’s ribs. It took her a while to catch her breath.

Andrew was too close, his deep voice rumbling right by her ear, his arms bracketing her in. She felt trapped and uncomfortable with him hovering so near. Turning her head away, she said, “I’m fine.”

She lifted her hand and moved his arm away from her back. “You don’t have to worry. Go sit down.”

Andrew glanced down at his hand where she’d pushed him away, his expression turning darker.

Pain still gnawed at every part of Emily’s body; just getting out those few words was a struggle, and soon another fit of coughing overtook her.

During a break in her coughing, she thought she heard Andrew sigh.

He placed his hand back on her back, patting it gently. “Alright, enough talking. Just lie down.”

As he spoke, he reached across her with his other hand, both arms steady but gentle, clearly trying to ease her back onto the bed.

But as soon as he came closer, Emily tensed up even more. There was no way she’d let him maneuver her like that.

She struggled. “I can do it myself, I don’t need help.”

Andrew hesitated, worried that her squirming would only make her injuries worse, and reluctantly let go.

But the moment he released her, Emily’s upper body pitched backward uncontrollably.

Andrew’s eyes flashed with alarm. He immediately reached out and caught her, supporting her as he perched on the edge of the bed, gazing down at her with furrowed brows.

Staring up at Andrew—who was now far too close for comfort—Emily blurted out, flustered, “Don’t—”

“Stop fussing,” Andrew cut her off firmly, his voice low.

He really left.

It was only when Elizabeth walked over that Emily snapped out of it, shoving Andrew away from her.

Elizabeth glanced at the TV, where the variety show was still blaring, the hosts and guests all laughing. The cheerful noise only made the silence in the hospital room feel more suffocating.

She shot a look at Andrew, who was standing by the bed, his face unreadable, and then turned to Emily. “When did he get here?”

Emily was still rattled by Tristan’s departure, her thoughts a messy jumble. She answered vaguely, “He just got here.”

Elizabeth’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. “…And what exactly were you two doing just now?”

Andrew looked down at Emily, saying nothing.

Emily took a shaky breath and shook her head. “It’s nothing.”
