My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 734

Emily’s ears went hot. “What are you talking about? When did I ever ask that?”

Elizabeth nodded right away, but the look on her face was anything but sincere. “Mm-hmm. Sure.”

Emily stared at her, speechless.

Then Elizabeth leaned in, lowering her voice. “I’m not actually here to defend Tristan, okay? I just think you could try being a little gentler with him. You know how it’s been these past few days—while you were in a coma, all the company matters fell to me. I had to handle everything, so I couldn’t stay at the hospital with you. Ms. George isn’t in the best health, and I was worried she’d make herself sick with worry, so I sent her home to rest. She can visit you when she feels up to it…”

She paused, then shrugged. “So basically, that left Tristan as the only one who could stay with you.”

Emily’s lashes fluttered. Her clear, dark eyes rested quietly on Elizabeth.

Elizabeth continued, “You must have seen what he looked like when you first woke up—he was a mess, nothing like himself. You were unconscious for three days, and Tristan stayed by your side the entire time. He barely slept, didn’t leave the hospital once.”

She couldn’t help but sigh. “I never imagined he’d do that. He hardly got any rest, and, well… he didn’t even shower. The clothes he was wearing when you woke up—he’d been in them since you were admitted. Only after you woke did he go home, clean up, shave, and make himself look presentable again.”

A heavy feeling settled in Emily’s chest, a tangled knot she couldn’t quite undo.

Elizabeth’s voice softened. “You don’t know what it was like. When we got to the hospital, you were already in intensive care. I remember it so clearly—Tristan was right by your side, crying. I’d never seen him cry before.”

Emily had no idea how to respond. Her heart felt painfully heavy and yet, at the same time, it pounded faster than ever, a confusing rush of emotions twisting her brow into a deep furrow.

No sooner had they settled into the private dining room than a news alert popped up on Isabella’s phone.

It was a headline about Emily Blair’s accident.

Her hands trembled so badly she nearly dropped her phone. She looked up at Benjamin, panic in her eyes.

Benjamin didn’t answer right away. He poured red wine into a pair of tall glasses, handed one to Isabella, and then filled his own. “Yes. It happened a few days ago. She just woke up today.”

Isabella watched him, unsettled by how calm he seemed. “How did it happen?”
