Emily nodded and said nothing more.
Andrew didn’t try to make conversation either. Once the nurse left, the room slipped back into a chilly silence.
Emily kept her eyes on the TV. She assumed Andrew wouldn’t say another word, but suddenly he spoke up: “That friend you mentioned—was it Tristan Davis? I remember you told me he was your boyfriend.”
She hesitated, then asked quietly, “Did you overhear us at the door?”
She vaguely recalled that, months ago, she and Tristan had pretended to be a couple in front of Andrew. It had been so long, she’d nearly forgotten about it—and she certainly hadn’t expected it to come up like this.
Andrew nodded, unbothered.
Emily said nothing more.
She didn’t want to explain herself, and frankly, it felt like he was crossing a line.
Still, in moments like this, silence almost became a kind of admission.
Andrew didn’t seem to care much about her answer anyway. He didn’t press.
Emily focused on the flickering screen, not noticing that in the quiet, Andrew’s lips curved in a fleeting smile—gone so quickly, it was almost as if she’d imagined it.
Time with Tristan passed quickly. Andrew glanced at his watch, stood, and said goodbye.
Emily replied with polite formality, “Goodbye.”
Before leaving, Andrew reminded her, “All these supplements are good for making soup. You can have your housekeeper take them home—she’ll appreciate it.”
Emily’s brow creased, barely perceptible.
She really thought Andrew was overstepping.
Still, she answered pleasantly, “Alright. I know.”
After he left, the nurse waiting outside came in with a gentle push of the door.
Since waking up, Emily had been handling work online to keep everything from piling up on Elizabeth Wilson.
During her days in a coma, Elizabeth’s stress had skyrocketed—she’d even lost weight from it.
After dealing with a few matters, a message popped up on Emily’s phone.
She opened it—it was from the lawyer she’d hired for Rose Ward’s grandmother.
Ms. Sanders: [Ms. Blair, the police in Astoria have already started investigating Isabella Austin’s trust fund.]
Ms. Sanders: [They’re also looking into Matthew Ross’s sister and brother, but apparently, neither of them has been to school for the past few days.]
Emily frowned at that message.
“Wow, what’s all this stuff?”
