As soon as Alex finished speaking, something seemed to occur to him. “I’m planning to go tomorrow. Do you want to come with me?”
Of course Emily wanted to go—she always did—but her body simply wouldn’t allow it right now.
Knock, knock, knock—
A familiar rhythm sounded at the door, slow and with a hint of playful mischief. That was unmistakably Tristan’s style.
Panic flickered across Emily’s face.
She instinctively didn’t want Tristan to see her sitting and talking with Alex like this.
Tristan had never approved of her continuing to investigate, and there was no way he’d miss what she and Alex were discussing. Their conversation could only be about Matthew Ross, and Tristan would see right through it.
If he found out, there was no telling what kind of mood he’d be in.
Emily sighed inwardly, her expression awkward for a moment—an expression that didn’t escape Alex’s notice.
He looked at her, puzzled. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” she replied, shaking her head and lowering her voice. “I’m not well enough to be out for long. Maybe you should go by yourself, okay?”
Alex nodded. “You’re right. Get some rest.”
When the silence stretched on, the knocking resumed.
There was no putting it off now. Emily raised her voice, “Come in.”
Of course, it was Tristan.
Emily was facing the door, so all she had to do was turn her head to see Tristan’s trademark smirk as he entered, carrying a thermal container. “Auntie couldn’t make it, so she sent me instead. No chicken soup today though—it’s pork and corn stew, your favorite. Eat it while it’s hot—”
Emily’s gaze was complicated as she watched him approach.
“That’s all?”
She nodded, her voice firmer now. “That’s all.”
Tristan studied her for a long moment before saying, “Emily, you know you’re a terrible liar?”
She gave a weak, awkward smile. “…I’m not lying.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Do you really believe that?”
Emily looked at him, then pressed her lips together and stared at the TV.
Tristan watched her for a while before looking away. He opened the thermal container, and the savory aroma of pork and corn stew quickly filled the room.
“Auntie spent days researching healthy recipes,” he said as he set out the food. “She made four different dishes for you. Eat up, okay?”
