My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 759

She said goodbye and was about to hang up when a soft rustling came through on the other end.

For reasons she couldn't explain, Isabella Austin’s finger hovered above the screen, pausing mid-motion. Then Andrew Lane’s deep, smooth voice came through the phone.

“Isabella.”

Hearing his voice, Isabella froze for a moment, caught off guard.

It struck her that she hadn’t heard Andrew’s voice in days. For a brief moment, she felt a bit disoriented, as if waking from a long dream.

“Andrew,” she murmured, her voice low. “Is something wrong?”

Andrew’s tone was steady, deliberate. “When exactly will you be back? I’ll have someone pick you up.”

A spark of happiness flickered in Isabella’s chest, curving her lips into a smile before she could help herself. She wanted to ask if Andrew missed her, but then suddenly remembered Benjamin Gomez was still in the room. The words caught in her throat and she let them go unsaid.

She did a quick mental calculation. “There are about twenty days left. I’ll let you know when I’m close, okay?”

Andrew’s voice was calm, revealing nothing. “Why is the business trip so long this time? Is something going on? Do you need help?”

His concern only warmed Isabella further, filling her with a gentle joy. “It’s nothing,” she reassured him softly. “I can handle it myself, Andrew. Don’t worry. Once I’m done, I’ll come straight home.”

He grunted in acknowledgment. “If anything gets complicated, you can come to me.”

Isabella’s smile grew tender, tinged with shyness. “I know, Andrew.”

“I’ll let you go.”

Even after she ended the call, the smile lingered on Isabella’s face, giving her away to Benjamin Gomez, who sat just a few feet away.

He could see she was still lost in thought, caught up in her conversation with Andrew. Displeased, Benjamin squeezed her waist with a pointed firmness.

Isabella had been gone far too long—over two weeks now, with no sign of returning. Dennis had been sulking every day, though he wouldn’t dare throw a tantrum in front of his father.

Still, children wear their feelings on their sleeves. Andrew, who’d spent years navigating the business world, saw right through him.

Isabella’s absence was unusual. In five years of marriage, she’d never been away this long—not even when she’d been on tour across the globe.

And her behavior on the phone had been off, too.

Glancing at Dennis, who sat on the living room floor playing with his toys in sullen silence, Andrew picked up his phone and called his assistant.

“Find out exactly where Mrs. Lane has been these past weeks. Look into it carefully.”

The assistant sounded surprised. “Mrs. Lane?”

But he caught on quickly and responded, “Of course, Mr. Lane.”
