“Do you have any evidence? Without proof, there’s nothing the police can do.”
Matthew Ross closed his eyes and said quietly, “I have recordings. Every time I spoke with Isabella Austin, I recorded our conversations.”
Now it was Alex White’s turn to fall silent.
Matthew waited, but when no answer came, he looked up. Alex’s expression had turned unreadable, his eyes distant and cold.
For a moment, Matthew was confused—then he remembered. Alex and Isabella had been close in college; Alex had even confided in him about his feelings for her.
Matthew fell silent as well.
After a long pause, Alex stood and said, “Tell the police everything you know. Hand over whatever evidence you have.”
Matthew nodded. “I understand.”
Alex had barely taken a step when Matthew suddenly called after him. “Alex… are you disappointed in me?”
He watched Alex’s face intently, searching for any trace of emotion.
“Yes, I am disappointed in you,” Alex said without hesitation.
Matthew’s gaze dropped, a wave of shame washing over him. He should have expected this. Why ask and make himself look even more pathetic?
Alex glanced down at the crown of Matthew’s bowed head and spoke, his voice measured. “But if you’re willing to admit you were wrong, then maybe I’m not that disappointed after all.”
Matthew’s eyes flickered with surprise.
Alex looked up, his gaze distant. “What worries me are the people who make mistakes and refuse to admit it, or change.”
Matthew looked up, meeting Alex’s eyes. “Who are you talking about?”
Isabella seized his wrist, her voice trembling. “Why are you meeting Andrew? What do you have to say to him?”
Benjamin said nothing, just watched her quietly.
She couldn’t stand the silence. “Well? Why are you meeting him? Didn’t you promise me you wouldn’t say anything? Why—”
“Isabella.” Benjamin raised a hand and pulled her into his arms, gently rubbing her back. “It’s not what you think. Relax, okay? There’s nothing to worry about.”
She clung to his shirt, her face still tense and pale. “Then tell me, why are you seeing Andrew?”
Benjamin laughed softly, masking the darkness in his eyes. “It’s just a normal dinner. I’m not going to tell him anything about us. Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon to keep you company, alright?”
Isabella still looked anxious. “If it’s just a regular dinner, then cancel it. Why do you have to go?”
