Suddenly, Emily Blair paused in her tracks and turned to Tristan Davis. “Could you help me look into Benjamin Gomez’s schedule for the past few days?”
Elizabeth Wilson blinked, curiosity piqued. “Is there something wrong? Do you suspect him?”
Emily nodded. “Benjamin Gomez treats Isabella Austin differently. There are things she couldn’t possibly pull off on her own, but he could. These recent events are just too strange. I can’t prove he’s behind them, but I can’t shake the feeling he’s involved.”
She hesitated, then added, “And think about it—Isabella got into that car accident because she was trying to save his daughter. Benjamin Gomez was the one who brought her to the hospital, too. It’s all a little too convenient. I doubt this is the end of it.”
Elizabeth fell silent, mulling over Emily’s words.
Tristan gave a reassuring nod. “I’ll keep an eye on him these next few days.”
Emily smiled, genuine and grateful. “Thank you.”
Tristan’s expression softened, and a hint of amusement sparkled in his eyes. “You don’t have to thank me. If you do, it feels like you don’t understand how much you mean to me.”
Emily’s eyes lingered on him for a moment before she glanced away, suddenly flustered.
Elizabeth immediately shot them a look, one eyebrow raised in mock accusation. “You two… what’s going on here?”
She pretended to pout. “Don’t start making eyes at each other while I’m still in the room, okay? If you keep it up, I’m going to get jealous.”
Emily let out a helpless sigh. “Give it a rest, will you?”
Elizabeth chuckled, clearly enjoying herself. “Alright, alright, I’ll stop bugging you. I’ll go check on Isabella and be back later.”
She stood, walked over to Tristan, and gave his shoulder a playful pat. “Now’s your chance—Emily’s vulnerable, and you’d be a fool not to seize the moment. Opportunities like this don’t come around twice.”
Emily wanted nothing more than to rush over and cover Elizabeth’s mouth, but she was too weak to do more than watch helplessly as Elizabeth sauntered out of the hospital room, leaving a trail of laughter behind.
Emily rattled off a few dishes, then suddenly remembered something important.
She realized she’d been preoccupied since waking up, her mind busy turning things over, and hadn’t really paid attention to anything else. Only now did she remember to ask, “Where’s my mom?”
Tristan replied, “I called her as soon as you woke up. She’s probably on her way here now.”
“Alright.”
Tristan headed out, and Emily watched him leave, her gaze lingering on his retreating figure.
She was used to handling things on her own, making her own decisions, rarely relying on anyone else. But she had to admit, having Tristan nearby made her feel genuinely reassured. He thought of everything, always putting her needs first—almost like family.
But with Elizabeth’s teasing still echoing in her mind, Emily wasn’t sure how she felt at all.
