My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 843

Mrs. Rivera looked at Cynthia and asked, “Let me ask you one more time—is it really Tristan Davis? Are you sure you don’t want anyone else?”

Cynthia lifted her head, her eyes red and swollen, vulnerability mingling with certainty. “It’s him. I don’t want anyone else.”

Mrs. Rivera pressed gently, “Even if he doesn’t like you? Even if he’s interested in another woman right now, you still want him?”

Cynthia hesitated for a split second, but her answer didn’t waver.

“Yes, I want him. He’s just been distracted by someone else, that’s all. He’ll come around. I’ll wait for him.”

Mrs. Rivera let out a soft, helpless sigh, but her tone was indulgent. “Alright, I understand. Your father and I will help you.”

Cynthia nodded emphatically, then threw herself back into her mother’s arms.

After a moment, Mrs. Rivera hesitated, then asked, “Cynthia, do you know who Tristan Davis is interested in right now?”

Cynthia’s lips twisted in annoyance. “Of course I know.”

Mrs. Rivera was about to press further when Cynthia cut her off, groaning, “Ugh, I don’t want to talk about her. Just mentioning her name annoys me.”

Mrs. Rivera chuckled and relented, “Alright, alright, we won’t talk about her.”

When Tristan Davis arrived at Emily Blair’s place, she was curled up on the couch, watching TV.

These past weeks since she’d been discharged from the hospital had been the most relaxing time she’d had in years. Her doctor had insisted she take it easy and focus on her recovery.

Elizabeth Wilson had heard the news and started picking up more of Emily’s workload, arriving and leaving the office on time for a change, and keeping her weekends as free as possible.

Emily was half-watching the TV when she heard the front door open. Glancing over, she saw Tristan step inside. “Back already?”

She glanced at the clock on the wall. He’d only been gone about ninety minutes.

Tristan slipped off his shoes and grinned, all irreverence. “Miss me already?”

Emily’s gaze flickered. “What are you talking about?”

He came closer, and she caught a whiff of alcohol on his breath.

Her brow furrowed. “You’ve been drinking in the middle of the day?”

Emily shot him a puzzled glance. “Why would I care?”

Tristan’s smile faded.

Just then, Emily flipped to a true crime show. Coincidentally, the segment was about a man who got drunk at a bar and was dragged off by a group of men with questionable intentions.

Emily watched the TV intently, not sparing Tristan so much as a glance.

He ducked his head and chuckled, his shoulders shaking.

“My friend’s a guy. We’ve known each other for years. He just finished a big project overseas and came home, so we met up for a couple of drinks.”

Emily arched an eyebrow, answering with a simple “Mm.”

Tristan stifled a laugh. “What did you think I was doing?”

Emily looked perfectly innocent. “I didn’t think anything.”

With that, she changed the channel again, switching off the crime show.
