My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 873

“Dennis, where did you run off to just now? Your grandpa and I have been worried sick looking for you!”

Dennis Lane didn’t answer; he just kept crying, his tears tugging at the heartstrings of his grandparents.

Isabella’s mother gathered him in her arms, her face a storm of worry and frustration. “Dennis, why are you soaking wet? Tell Grandma—did someone bully you?”

Isabella’s father’s voice was grave, “Yes, why are you all wet?”

Emily Blair hadn’t planned to linger and watch the touching family reunion. She had just turned to leave when Dennis Lane, face streaked with tears and indignation, jabbed a finger in her direction and wailed at the top of his lungs.

“It was her! That mean lady hurt me!”

Emily froze. Was he talking about... her?

She glanced around, but there was no one else nearby. Dennis Lane’s trembling finger pointed directly at her.

Emily could only laugh in disbelief.

So much for gratitude—she’d just saved this little brat, and now he was throwing her under the bus without a second thought.

“Who?” Isabella’s parents whipped around, their faces instantly clouded with anger.

Emily watched as their expressions darkened the moment they saw her.

Dennis kept up the dramatic sobs. “It’s her, it’s her! She did it!”

Isabella’s mother grabbed his shoulders, voice trembling, “Dennis, what did she do to you?”

Dennis wasted no time spinning his tale, practically shouting, “She yelled at me, she hit me, and then she tried to drown me in the sea!”

Their faces paled. “She tried to drown you?” Isabella’s father echoed, horror-struck.

Emily caught her wrist, blocking the blow, and let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Ma’am, you must be getting senile. When exactly did I ever harm Isabella?”

Isabella’s mother’s eyes were nearly wild. Her voice was icy. “Back when Isabella was alive, you were always scheming behind her back, making her cry all the time. Even after she married Andrew, you kept chasing after him. Now that Isabella’s gone, you finally get your chance, huh? You must be thrilled! How dare you even show your face here, let alone go after Dennis?”

She was practically shaking with rage. “I’m calling the police! The world deserves to know what kind of home-wrecking, child-harming woman you are!”

Emily wasn’t about to let herself be slandered without a fight. As Isabella’s mother spat out her accusations, Emily shoved her forcefully.

“Ma’am, you’d better have proof before you open your mouth. Otherwise, that’s slander and defamation. And just so you know, I’ve recorded everything you’ve just said. If you keep this up, I’ll be the one calling the police.”

She sneered, “Between Isabella and me, don’t you know who was really at fault? Or are you just pretending you don’t?”

Isabella’s mother, teetering in her heels, nearly lost her balance from Emily’s shove. It was only Isabella’s father hurrying over that kept her from falling.
