Emily Blair stared at the woman’s face.
It was unfamiliar—she was sure of that. And yet, there was something hauntingly recognizable about the way she carried herself, the subtle tilt of her chin, the quiet defiance in her eyes.
She’d seen that same air before, in Isabella Austin.
A wild, almost blasphemous idea began to form in Emily’s mind.
Isabella’s death had been so sudden. The burial was rushed, and Emily had never actually seen Isabella’s body.
The funeral itself was small, almost secretive; only a handful of people even knew it had happened.
To this day, most people on the outside had no clue Isabella was even gone.
And Andrew Lane—Isabella’s devoted lover—had shown no visible grief whatsoever. If anything, he seemed completely unchanged.
That was impossible. Andrew had loved Isabella deeply. There was no way her death wouldn’t have left a mark on him.
Emily had once accepted the rumors: that Isabella had done something disgraceful, and the Austin family had hurried through a quiet, private funeral for the sake of appearances.
But now, the more she thought about it, the more the inconsistencies piled up.
The real question was: did Isabella Austin really die?
And if she hadn’t—where did she go?
The woman now trailing at Benjamin Gomez’s side had never been a part of his life before. Her sudden appearance, right after Isabella’s supposed death, was just too coincidental.
For weeks, every photo of Benjamin Gomez taken by Tristan Davis’s people had captured this woman with her face obscured, always hiding behind a mask, her gaze lowered. No one had ever seen her face.
A bold possibility took root in Emily’s mind.
She hesitated only a moment before messaging Tristan.
Could you look into the cosmetic surgery clinics in Aetheria for me? I think this woman might actually be Isabella Austin.
Tristan replied almost instantly, as brief as always: Sure.
After a beat, guilt pricked at Emily. Is this too much trouble for you?
Tristan sent back a question mark, then followed up: Whoever you are, get off Emily’s phone right now.
Emily burst out laughing. What’s with you?
