My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 948

After a moment, Emma waved her hand dismissively. “Honestly, child, I don’t even know what you’re talking about.”

Emily Blair turned, stepped closer, and looked her straight in the eye.

“I heard everything. You said Isabella Austin isn’t her parents’ biological daughter. You also said you’re Isabella’s birth mother—Cynthia—and you know where their real child is.”

Emma George couldn’t bring herself to meet Emily’s gaze.

She lowered her head and forced a laugh. “No, you must have misheard. I never said any of that—”

“Mom, do you really think playing dumb is going to work now? Tell me the truth,” Emily cut her off abruptly. “What exactly were you planning to tell them?”

Emma’s face blanched, her fists clenching tight.

She pressed her lips together, pale and trembling. “No, you heard wrong…”

Emily asked her directly, “Who is their real child?”

Emma looked away, lips pressed in a hard, silent line.

“Feeling guilty?” Emily pressed on. “Does this have something to do with me?”

Emma’s heart skipped a beat. Suddenly, she shoved Emily aside, making a break for the stairs.

But Emily grabbed her wrist, holding her back. “If this has nothing to do with me, then why are you hiding it? And if it’s all nothing, why won’t you say a word—especially now?”

A wild, absurd thought flashed through Emily’s mind, so outrageous it seemed like a cruel joke or some twisted prank.

She’d grown up with Emma George and Farley Blair as her parents. For as long as she could remember, she’d always been their only daughter. Life hadn’t been easy, but her parents had given her everything they could.

Sure, there were people who’d commented that she didn’t look much like her mom or dad, but until she’d overheard Emma’s words, Emily had never once doubted she was their biological child.
